The Municipal Budgetary Institution of Culture «OHMM» was created according to the resolution of the chief of the Municipal Association «The town of Onega and the District of Onega» dated December 26, 2005.
The museum consists of two buildings with show-rooms. They are situated on the crossing of Kirov avenue and Gogol street.

The state museum was created in 1976. 5-8 new exhibitions are opened every year. They function 360 days a year and within that period about 18000 persons manage to visit them. About 350 excursions, lessons and lectures take place every year. The staff of the museum continuously work out new excursions, lessons, lectures and develop new forms of work with visitors.
The museum brings up the younger generation in accordance with the best examples of their fathers’ and grandfathers’ lives. The Museum is the Memory. We are alive while there is the memo
The museum contains interesting memorial collections of the Kouchins and of the Negodyayevs that lived in Onega at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th centuries, a hoard hidden in 1916, a collection of Onega embroidery.
